Be sustainable, design a vintage lampshade with reusable materials
Price : $20
Time : 6 hours
All you need is :
- A glue gun - Thin newspapers - 10 to 15 recycled plastic containers (Think of all your T/A food) - A spray adhesive for paper
I found my lampshade in a second hand shop for $2 (!!) The outline of the lamp was paper so it was easy for me to remove it all, to only keep the structure.
Clean the base, cut the containers, prepare your glue gun ...
Cut all plastic containers to fit the steel base playing with shapes and to obtain good vintage result.
The glue gun is best to attach plastic, iron/steel or other similar materials together, most of architects use it to create Maquettes.
Do it carefully ; the glue gun needs five minutes to warm up then it's like a dragon fire and burns your fingers if you do not take care, don't worry you will stay alive and be able to remove the glue when cooled down.
For best adherence, keep pressing the plastic against the base for around five minutes.
Next step : rip the newspaper and use the spray
Many things can be done with spray adhesive. The one I found interesting is to stick the newspaper's writing on the transparent plastic surface (photo above).
For the result above, follow this process :
- Face the writing against the plastic surface - Spray the back of the paper and leave it for few minutes until it sticks a little bit - Gently remove the paper
It took me few tries before getting it right...
Then continue the process by spreading the glue directly on the lamp shade and to add all other pieces to cover it all.
Note : Be gentle with the adhesive spray, the lamp shade might by sticky for a long time if you go your hardest with it.
Now you can use your lamp shade as a pendant or floor light to feature your room !
